Q32. How to get citizenship in Canada or Australia and time involved in it?

CANADA

To become a Canadian citizen, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a permanent resident for 3 years.
  • Have lived in Canada for at least 3 out of the last 5 years (1,095 days).
  • Have filed your taxes (if required).
  • Give language skills test in English or French (CLB-4). (18-54 years old have to pass test)
  • Pass a citizenship test.
  • Take the oath of citizenship.

You can do both electronic and paper-based application.

AUSTRALIA

Steps to become an Australian Citizen:

  • Be on a permanent residency visa.
  • Meet residency requirements (physical presence in Australia for at least 4 out of the last 5 years as a permanent resident).
  • Pass English exam (Competent level - 6 each in IELTS) (Age 60 and older are exempted).
  • Pass the citizenship test.
  • Attend a citizenship ceremony.

Apart from these requirements, you will also be required to furnish documentary evidence for your identity, residency, English proficiency, character, photographs, and application fee.

Note: You do not become a citizen if you marry a citizen of Australia or Canada. You cannot become a citizen if you have a criminal history.
