Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417)
The Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) is designed for young individuals seeking to explore Australia through a holiday experience combined with short-term work opportunities. This temporary visa promotes cultural exchange and strengthens connections between Australia and eligible countries.
It allows holders to enjoy up to a year in Australia, engaging in travel, work, and cultural immersion.
First Working Holiday Visa
To apply for your first Working Holiday visa, you must be outside Australia when submitting your application and when the visa is granted.
Second Working Holiday Visa
If you apply for your second Working Holiday visa while in Australia, you must be in Australia when the visa is granted. If applying from outside Australia, you must be outside Australia when the visa is granted.
Visa Validity
First Working Holiday Visa
- Enter Australia within 12 months from the visa grant date (no extensions or deferrals).
- Stay in Australia for up to 12 months from your initial entry date.
- Leave and re-enter Australia multiple times while the visa is valid.
Second Working Holiday Visa
- If already in Australia on a Working Holiday visa:
- Stay up to 24 months from your initial entry on your first Working Holiday visa.
- Leave and re-enter Australia multiple times while the visa is valid.
- If applying from outside Australia:
- Travel to Australia within 12 months from the visa grant date (no extensions or deferrals).
- Stay in Australia for 12 months from your initial entry date on the second Working Holiday visa.
- Leave and re-enter Australia multiple times while the visa is valid.
Visa Privileges
This visa allows you to:
- Stay in Australia for up to 12 months.
- Work for up to six months with each employer.
- Study for up to four months.
- Leave and re-enter Australia multiple times while the visa is valid.
Employment Conditions
If you hold a Working Holiday visa, your main purpose must be an extended holiday. You can engage in any type of work during your 12-month stay in Australia, with a maximum of six months per employer.
The six-month limit applies to full-time, part-time, casual, shift, and voluntary work roles.
Volunteer work and workplace-based training are also subject to the six-month employment limit with each employer.
Permission to work longer than six months with the same employer is granted only in exceptional circumstances.
Requirements
You may be eligible for this visa if you:
- Have not previously held a Work and Holiday (Temporary) visa (subclass 462).
- Hold a valid passport from a country participating in the Working Holiday Program with Australia.
- Are aged between 18 and 31 years at the time of application.
- Intend to holiday in Australia as a genuine visitor.
- Possess sufficient funds (approximately AUD 5000) to support yourself.
- Can afford a return or onward travel ticket at the end of your stay.
- Will not be accompanied by dependent children during your stay.
- Meet specific health requirements and have health insurance.
- Are willing to provide a police certificate.
- Have no outstanding debts to the Australian Government or have arranged repayment.
- May need to provide biometrics as part of the application process.
Second Working Holiday Visa
To apply for a second Working Holiday (Temporary) visa (subclass 417), you must:
- Have complied with all conditions of your first Working Holiday visa.
- Have not previously held more than one Working Holiday visa.
- Have completed three months of specified work in regional Australia during your first Working Holiday visa.
